Clinicostatistical Studies on Tumors of Infancy and Childhood


Abstract
In order to investigate the nature and characteristics of childhood tumors among Korean, one hundred twenty cases of histologically and hematologically confirmed infancy and childhood tumors diagnosed at Korea University Hospital, from January, 1967 to August, 1978 were studied. Results summerized were as follows.
1) The incidence of childhood tumors on all admitted cases was 0.83%, among those, benign tumor was 0.43%, and malignant, 0.40%.
2) Females were more affected than males in benign tumors as male to female ratio 0.87: 1 and there were no significant sexual difference in malignant tumors (1.1 : 1).
3) The annual incidence showed no significant difference.
4) The highest age incidence was found in the group of 1-6 years in both benign and malignant tumors.
5) The common sites of organ involvement by benign tumors were skin, neck, and face in that order, and by malignant tumors blood, nervous system and face.
6) The most common tumor of pediatric patients was leukemia (25% of total tumor cases), which was also the most frequent one in malignant tumors of childhood (51.72% of malignant tumors).
The highest age incidence of leukemia was in the age group of 1-6 years and there was no sexual difference. Most of the leukemia was acute form (86.675vo) and acute lymphocytic type was the most common type(46.67%)
